Religious Education

What is the curriculum trying to achieve?

The Humanities faculty creates students who:

  • Develop intellectual curiosity and the ability to work collaboratively

  • Understand the diverse world they live in and how it came to be

  • Have the tools and knowledge to critically evaluate and debate the ideas they encounter

  • Are prepared to live in a world facing unprecedented challenges

  • Understand how they can influence and change the world around them

  • Are morally and ethically aware of their responsibilities as global citizens

In delivering RE we believe that one of the core roles of the subject is to encourage students to challenge their assumptions and to have the resilience and creativity to ask the fundamental, and sometimes potentially unanswerable, questions about the nature of religion, the world, society and humanity’s purpose in relation to these areas.

We assess our students at KS3 against two primary areas: Learning About Religion and Learning From Religion.  The former requires a knowledge-based approach to the faiths and philosophical issues studied, requiring recall and recognition of religious terminology and ideology and an understanding of the teachings of the faiths found both within Britain and in the wider world as well as the impact religion can have on individuals and societies.  Learning From Religion is about allowing students to draw on their own experiences and reflect on their values in order to empathise with others, viewing people with differing beliefs in a positive way and valuing equality, as well as allowing students the space, freedom and courage to explore moral and philosophical issues.

As a result, the RE curriculum needs to balance the need for academic rigour with allowing space for personal reflection and development of personal moral integrity

How do we organise learning?

Each of our subjects organises learning to achieve our federation vision of ‘Educating today’s students for the world of tomorrow: a seamless education from 4 to 19’.  Please click here to see a visual map of students’ planned ‘learning journey’ in RE across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4.
