We are delighted to report that late last year, Year 12 student, Alisdair Shankland was appointed Lord-Lieutenant's Top Cadet. The Lord-Lieutenant of the Royal County of Berkshire, Andrew Try, said: "It’s a real accolade and reflection of the cadet and their potential."

"The appointment as a Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadet especially in the only Royal County in the Country, means that I am given the opportunity to attend a wide variety of events such as Royal Visits such as the Duchess of Edinburgh’s appearance at the NSPCC Number Day Launch in Windsor and attending the awarding of some of the King’s Awards for elements such as Enterprise and Voluntary Service.

The school has provided me with a wealth of support as without the assistance of my teachers arranging to send me the work whilst I am attending some events during the school day, I would be falling behind in my courses, so I am very thankful to the School staff for supporting me in attending these events and functions.

The Downs also has a strong cadet community with five members of my specific cadet force and several others from the other two main cadet forces ranging from year 7s to year 12s, creating a healthy mix of ages and cadet forces throughout the whole school
